The Institute of Christ the King from Wisconsin has assumed responsibility for St. 9/4/2004 3:24:00 PM -Institute of Christ the King
The Institute of Christ the King from Wisconsin has assumed responsibility for St. Gelasius on Chicago's south side, effectively saving the landmark church from the wrecking ball. Now the Institute needs your help. Any and all able bodied Catholics are invited to join in the effort to rehab and restore this Chicago treasure. We recently received the following letter from the Institute: Many greetings from Msgr. Schmitz who is now in Gricigiliano, Italy, for the Institute of Christ the King's annual Chapter Meeting. Monsignor is grateful that you welcome the Institute to Chicago and is looking forward to meeting with you when he returns later this fall from Europe. My name is Diane Streich, and I work for Msgr. Schmitz and the Institute of Christ the King as the Project Manager for the renovation projects at St. Gelasius Church and Priory. Msgr. has told me of your generous offer to help with this project and has asked me to let you know that we would welcome your help at this time, if you are available. Currently we are working to make ready the Priory for Msgr. Schmitz and other Priests and Seminarians who will soon reside here. The seminarians have been working diligently to clean the Priory, but, as time is running short, there are some tasks that we could use help with. I have made a list of the more urgent tasks. If there is anything on this list that you would be able to offer your assistance with, Msgr. would greatly appreciate your generosity. 1. Wash walls. 2. Remove rubber base. 3. Remove anchors in walls. 4. Scrape and wash wood trim on walls. 5. Wire brush and prep metal panels for spray painting. 6. Spray paint metal panels. 7. Sweep and wash floors when prep work is complete. 8. Clean stair railings. Polish. If any of you are skilled in wood finishing, or have other skills that you would like to offer, please let me know. If at all possible, we are looking for help after Labor Day and up through September 11th. On Sept. 11 we will be spending all day cleaning up.
