Catholic Counter-Reformation: It’s Effect on Arts and Architecture
The Catholic Church responded to the Protestant Reformation not only through the reforms resulting from the Council of Trent but very effectively through Arts and Architecture.
The Catholic Reading Club is presenting a lecture on the subject by Denis R. McNamara Ph.D., Associate Director and Associate Professor of the Liturgical Institute of St.Mary of the Lake University/ Seminary, Mundelein, Illinois.
Dr. McNamara’s expertise in the theology of sacred architecture will enable attendees to appreciate how the art and architecture of this period not only instructed but raised the religious consciousness, and celebrated many of the reasserted tenets of the Catholic Church such as the necessity of sacraments, veneration of Mary and the saints, etc. Included in the presentation will be the contributions in arts and architecture made by the newly-founded Jesuit order.
This is an unusual opportunity in this period of the observance of the Protestant Reformation anniversary to increase our understanding and appreciation of the Catholic Church’s response.
All are invited to this outstanding presentation which will be held on November 30, 9:30-noon, at the Chesterton Academy of the Holy Family 339, 4th Street, Downers Grove, IL. Light refreshments will be served.
In order to serve our guests properly, the Catholic Reading Club would appreciate knowing who will be attending. If you planning to attend, or need a ride, please call either Madonna Muscarello, at 630-325-7990 (gracicakes@gmail.com) or Pauline Scharres 630-257-2693 (pmscharres@att.net).
