After a year of mounting pressure, Rev. John P. Smyth, the popular but controversial leader of Maryville Academy, has agreed to step down in January, sources said Saturday. Word of Smyth’s decision came during Maryville’s annual board meeting Saturday at its Des Plaines campus, the City of Youth.
