A major restructuring of the leadership of Maryville Academy in Des Plaines has “elevated” Father John Smyth to the position of president emeritus/chancellor and Father David Ryan as acting executive director. The move, approved at Maryville’s annual board meeting last Saturday moves Smyth out as head of the day to day operation of the facility and into a position that he can define himself. It’s believed, however, that critics of the way Maryville has been run in recent years, will assert that the announcement will result in little change and that Smyth will continue to run the academy behind the scenes.
