The City Council of Springfield, the capital of Illinois, is currently involved in a vote to allow sexual orientation to be added to the protected classes in its non-discrimination policy. An affirmative vote in this action would result in, among other things, prohibiting landlords from denying rentals to active homosexual couples and forbidding business owners from refusing to employ openly homosexual persons based on the lifestyle they lead. A Catholic man, for example, who rents out a guest house on his property would not be able to refuse it to a pair of active sodomites based on his religious conviction.
