Victory in Defeat: Pro-lifers get NEA vote out in the open

On Monday, July 6, the National Education Association finished its July 1-6 convention in San Diego. Conservative members of the National Education Association demanded a vote asking the NEA to take a neutral instead of a pro-abortion stance. The pro-abortion forces, supported by NEA leadership, were proposing amendments to the motion for neutrality, to prevent a clear up-or-down vote on the proposal. In response to these maneuvers, the following letter by Life Legal Defense Foundation’s Catherine Short was hand-delivered to the NEA president, Dennis Van Roekel, threatening legal action. According to sources, after one of the NEA delegates delivered the letter, the leadership immediately backed down and let the vote take place, with no amendments from the floor.
