Springfield Bishop-elect clarifies comments on clergy abuse

The incoming Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Springfield, Illinois, Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Chicago, says his views on clergy abuse have been distorted and misrepresented. In an interview on KMOX, Bishop Paprocki says a number of people have claimed he said things he didn’t say during a homily in 2007 to a “Red Mass” for Catholic lawyers and judges in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “Most importantly, they are saying I am calling for a return to charitable immunity so that people who have been harmed in some way would not be able to bring lawsuits against the church or in some way get compensation,” said Paprocki. “And I have never said that.”
