The Chicago Tribune has reported today that Auxiliary Bishop James E. Fitzgerald resigned from the Catholic Diocese of Joliet on Thursday because of failing health from Parkinson’s disease, diocesan officials said. The Joliet Diocese spokesman John Cullen said Fitzgerald, 64, was appointed an auxiliary bishop in March 2002. He was diagnosed with the neurological disease in December and has not been working for some time. “Until he became ill, he was a very vigorous man,” Cullen said.
