“Despite vows by Roman Catholic Church leaders to be more compassionate toward victims of abusive priests, the Joliet diocese has used statute of limitations claims to fight lawsuits filed by alleged victims, plaintiffs’ lawyers say. This year diocesan lawyers sought to dismiss three lawsuits on grounds that the incidents occurred too long ago, even though all three priests named in the suits had been removed from ministry because of credible sexual abuse claims. The suits, filed in 2002 on behalf of seven people whose allegations date to the late 1970s, were dismissed last spring in Will County Circuit Court.”
