The Winnebago County Board in northwestern Illinois has come under fire for a proposal to demolish St. Mary-s Church and to expand the county jail. St. Mary-s offers daily Mass, has spawned two private schools, and is a shining star among orthodox and traditional Catholic groups that are working to revive urban parishes across the country. The plans to demolish the church were leaked over Labor Day while Bishop Doran was out of town. The County Board denies it ever intended to demolish the church, but is having difficulty convincing the community.
