We don’t normally give space to dissenters on this site, but because Gary Wills is a leading candidate for the 2003 Catholic Citizens of Illinois Bishop Cramner Award for Betrayal of the Faith, we bite our lip and present the gross reality.

Peter Steinfels and his wife Peggy are at the vanguard of efforts to turn the Roman Catholic faith into another watered down celebration of “me in the modern world.” Jesus, tradition and sacraments are background noise. The extent to which Steinfels fawns over Mr. Seamless Garment himself, Cardinal Bernardin, is pathetic, but expected, and ends with an equally predictable slam on Cardinal Law, who thank God was able to expose the fraudulent Common Ground Initiative for what it was – an effort to place dissent from Catholic teaching on equal footing with faithfulness to Catholic teaching.

Stienfels and Wills are the part of the problem, and not even remotely close to solutions.
