“Why Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world [Matt. 16:26]. But for Wales?”

In the famous film, “A Man for All Seasons,” after Richard Rich perjures himself to condemn Sir Thomas More to death, More notices that Rich is wearing a chain of office—he has been named Attorney General for Wales.

As to this day, the elite of More’s times considered Wales a rural and provincial backwater. More remarks, “Why Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world. But for Wales?”

In tumultuous times, the tensions between Church and State can be toxic. Step by step, church leaders can lose sight of our sole reason for traversing our “mortal coil.” When enough do, the Zachariah in our midst, reminding us that we might have lost our way, becomes a dangerous irritant, as was Sir Thomas More to Henry VIII. And then is can become easier to silence the messenger. “But for Wales?”
