During his presidential campaign, Obama promised he would pass the “Freedom of Choice Act” (known as FOCA) after he became president. Unfortunately, ths looks like it could be a promise he might keep. FOCA creates a “fundamental right” to abortion throughout the nine months of pregnancy. There would be no governmental body that could “deny or interfere” with this “right” or to discriminate against this “right” in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services or information. For the first time, abortion would become an entitlement that the government would and must condone and promote. This law would go way beyond Roe vs. Wade because it would impose an extreme regimen upon our country. It would eliminate informed consent, parental involvement laws, laws promoting maternal health, abortion clinic regulations, government programs and facilities that promote childbirth and other health care, without also subsidizing abortion.Conscience protections laws and partial birth abortions would be affected also.
