The Power of One

America was established as a great experiment in human liberty, based upon a belief in the worth and dignity of the individual person. The Founders provided a vision in the Declaration of Independence, and set forth a means for assuring liberty through selfgovernment in the Constitution. In the latter document, they allowed for the election of representatives and established a limited, self-checking government through the division of powers. But declaring a belief and ordering it through an organizational structure is not enough – it must be sustained. When asked what type of government was created by the Constitution, Benjamin Franklin is reputed to have said, “We have a Republic, if we can keep it.”
