“Jesus…taught that in order to go to heaven you must give away your possessions.” Dr. Candida Moss, University of Notre Dame

We recently introduced Notre Dame theology professor Candida Moss by way of her book in which she dismissed accounts of early Christian persecution and attributed the strong pro-life and religious liberty stances of religious and political leaders to their delusions about Christian martyrdom.

Early Church leaders, she wrote, “exaggerated, revised, and forged” history in order “to justify and support the institutions of orthodoxy,” “to bolster the position of the church hierarchy,” and “to fund churches.” And in our time, she claimed, Church leaders like Notre Dame board member Bishop Daniel Jenky and long-time Notre Dame bishop the late Most Rev. John M. Darcy have blocked political compromise on abortion and religious liberty issues because they believe in this ersatz “history.”
