In this wide-ranging interview, Cardinal James Francis Stafford identifies the real problem in the United States is the conflict between Christian values and the now well entrenched pagan culture. The difficulty the US bishops have had in confronting pro-abortion Catholic politicians shows that the bishops have yet to develop a workable strategy for confronting the bigger cultural conflict. Stafford notes the ‘crisis’ will not improve until this stratagy is in place, and could motivate a plenary council (hint-hint?.) In spite of the dissappointing assessment that lay involvement is the greatest achievement of Vatican II – hardly one of the top goals of the Second Vatican Council – this is a very interesting discussion that reveals much about Rome’s attitudes toward the US Church and the cultural war wrecking our nation.
