Since even before Our Lord was amongst us, there has been a difficult tension between what “the law” proscribes and how we, as faithful believers, are expected to conduct ourselves.

Thus, at Matthew 23:1-5, Jesus instructs:

“The scribes and the Pharisees [sit] on the chair of Moses. All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not; for they say, and do not… And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge their fringes.”

As faithful believers, we today must contend not with the chair of Moses but the chair of Peter.  Yet we also must contend with our own “scribes and pharisees.”  But just as in Jesus’ time, these authorities do not always themselves agree.  Indeed, not infrequently some even seem to contradict themselves, from one pronouncement to the next.  How then can we, as faithful laity, sort out what we are to “observe,” and what we need not or indeed must not observe, given our Lord’s admonition.  It’s both more complex and more simple than it seems.

Peter Kwasniewski (pronounced, at least in America, as Quash-NEV-ski), born in Chicago in 1971, spent his youth in New Jersey, where attendance at an all-boys Catholic high school brought him an exceptional training in humanities and poor to non-existent religious instruction.​

Dr. Kwasniewski went off to Georgetown University for a single year, after which he made one of the best moves of his life by starting over again at Thomas Aquinas College in California, from which he received a B.A. in Liberal Arts in 1994.

Not having had his fill of Washington, D.C., he earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from The Catholic University of America, whose giant statue of Pope Leo XIII in McMahon Hall was a beneficent presence throughout.

After teaching philosophy and theology at the International Theological Institute in Austria and music for the Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Austrian Program (1998–2006), Dr. Kwasniewski joined the founding team of Wyoming Catholic College in Lander, Wyoming, where he served as the first Director of Admissions and Assistant Academic Dean, directed the Choir and Schola, and taught, over time, all of the theology courses and most of the philosophy and fine arts courses (2006–2018). He left WCC in the summer of 2018 to pursue a career as a freelance author, public speaker, editor, publisher, and composer, with the intention of dedicating his life to the articulation and defense of Catholic Tradition in all its dimensions.​

Over the past twenty years, Kwasniewski has published over 1,300 articles, both academic and popular, on sacramental and liturgical theology, the aesthetics of music, Thomistic thought, and the social doctrine of the Church. His articles have been translated into at least 18 languages.​

Many of his approximately 150 musical works have been performed in liturgical settings and in concert.​Dr. Kwasniewski has also worked with The Aquinas Institute that is editing and publishing the Opera Omnia of the Angelic Doctor in some 60 volumes. He is a Fellow of the Albertus Magnus Center for Scholastic Studies and a Senior Fellow of the St. Paul Center in Steubenville.
